For families
Using ESA or tax-credit funds
Last updated 2 November 2026
Families already use education savings accounts (ESAs) and state homeschool tax credits for HomeRoam Plus. Here's what usually works, the receipt you'll need, and what to check with your program first.
Your program decides, not us. Every state's rules are different and change each school year. HomeRoam isn't approved, certified or endorsed by any state program, and nothing here is tax or legal advice. When in doubt, ask your program before you buy.
The short version
- HomeRoam Plus is an educational software subscription: lessons for real places, written for each child's grade, with hours logged by subject for your records.
- You subscribe in the app through the App Store or Google Play, then submit the store's receipt to your program for reimbursement, or keep it for your tax credit.
- The yearly plan ($79.99) is the easy one: one receipt a year instead of twelve monthly claims.
Programs that reimburse educational apps
As of November 2026, these programs' published rules list educational software, apps or online subscriptions as an allowed expense and let families claim reimbursement. Check the current year's handbook before you buy.
- Arizona: Empowerment Scholarship Account (see the note on more than one child below)
- Florida: Personalized Education Program (PEP) and FES-UA, through Step Up For Students
- Arkansas: Education Freedom Accounts
- Utah: Utah Fits All Scholarship
- New Hampshire: Education Freedom Accounts
- West Virginia: Hope Scholarship (check its reimbursement policy for software)
State homeschool tax credits and deductions
No application or approval is involved: you pay, keep the receipt, and claim it on your state return. As of the latest instructions:
- Ohio: the home education expense credit names software, applications and subscriptions
- Minnesota: the K-12 education credit and subtraction cover educational software
- Indiana: the homeschool expense deduction includes computer software
- Oklahoma: the Parental Choice homeschool credit covers instructional materials
Programs that only pay through their own marketplace
Some programs don't reimburse at all. Families can only buy from approved vendors inside the program's marketplace. That includes Texas (Education Freedom Accounts), Louisiana (GATOR), Alabama (CHOOSE Act), Georgia (Promise Scholarship) and South Carolina (ESTF). HomeRoam isn't in those marketplaces yet. If you're in one of these programs, email hello@homeroam.app. Knowing who's waiting helps us decide where to apply first.
Getting your receipt
iPhone or iPad (App Store)
Apple emails a receipt when you subscribe and each time it renews. You can also find it at reportaproblem.apple.com, or in Settings: tap your name, then Media & Purchases, then View Account, then Purchase History. It shows HomeRoam Plus, the plan, the date, the price and an order ID.
Android (Google Play)
Google emails an order receipt for each payment. You'll also find it in the Play Store: tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & history.
Most programs want an itemized receipt plus proof of payment: the email receipt itself, not a screenshot of the app. Submit after you've paid, and after your ESA contract has started.
What to call it on a claim
Programs name the category differently: "educational software and applications", "digital materials", or "curriculum and supplemental materials". A description that usually fits:
HomeRoam Plus: an educational software subscription for home education. It writes grade-level lessons in science, history and social studies, math, language arts, art and music, health and PE, and practical life, and records instructional hours by subject.
Some programs (Arizona's, for example) also ask you to name the curriculum or course of study the item supports.
More than one child?
One HomeRoam Plus subscription covers every child in your family. Some programs only fund single-user subscriptions, or ask for each student's share on the receipt. App Store and Google Play receipts can't split the price by child, so if you have more than one ESA student, check with your program how to claim it (some reimburse each student's share).
Need something from us?
If your program asks for a description of HomeRoam or a letter about what it covers, email hello@homeroam.app and a person will send one.
